Odyssey did not suceed to replicate 64 imo and I know I'm not alone there. I loved SM3DW, more than Land, to me that was a clever mash-up of old and new. I loved it and still do! I loved Sunshine on the GC too, still do! Loved Galaxy on the Wii, SMG2 was not anything special in my eyes just more of Galaxy with a lacking hub and level select screen.

The N64 was the first home console I owned and SM64 was the first game I got for it. Odyssey was a cool game, and very fun, it just wasn't really the throwback Mario I expected. But that was a much much worse game than Odyssey. I had the same problem with Yooka-Laylee were everything felt just way too big and lifeless. Every Star you had to commit to, it wasn't just a hit and grab. In SM64, passing a new Star meant you had to completely refocus on that new objective or take a mental note and come back later. I don't care about any of these moons specifically because there's so many of them that I will most likely move on to the next by complete accident, or I'll pass 15 on my way to my next objective. My problem with Odyssey that the moons are so littered everywhere that they feel like non-events. It felt like I had just overcome something. I SM64, Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie and Donkey Kong 64, the objectives felt like events. SM64 was one of my first games (along with Ocarina of Time and Banjo Kazooie), and I have to saw that I was a bit let down with Odyssey's "old school collectathon" gameplay. I'm glad that many enjoyed Odyssey, but I do think that if Nintendo wants to return to this formula, they have to polish the gameplay a bit more and mitigate "slower" moments. It ruined the momentum and didn't allow for a quick, steady flow of platforming amazingness that SMG had. Some moons started to feel more like filler and less like ingeniously crafted obstacle courses. The capture mechanic was great, and the platforming sections were pretty fun, but all of my enjoyment came to a screeching halt when I was forced to look for moons in mundane places or hiding spots. The amazing soundtrack, the space setting, and zero gravity were ultimately aesthetic but greatly complemented the gameplay.įor me Odyssey had its moments, but ultimately its sandbox structure sort of ruined it for me.

This kept the gameplay fresh and fast-paced, and the game continues to astonish you with its ingenuity every passing second. The game took you from planet to planet, each with its own unique mechanic or idea, and then zipped you to another planet before you got bored of it. With Super Mario Galaxy 2 being my favorite game of all time, I think it helped put into perspective why I was a bit let down by Odyssey.įrom a design standpoint, SMG was raw platforming bliss.
